Managing Menorrhagia

Assessment and Management of Heavy Menstrual Bleeding in the Primary Care Setting-Heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB), sometimes known as menorrhagia, is one of the most frequent complaints in the gynecologic and primary care settings. While menorrhagia may occur in both ovulatory and anovulatory women, in this activity we will be using the term to mean ovulatory abnormal bleeding. Twenty percent of women experience excessive or prolonged menstrual bleeding at some time during their lives, particularly as they approach menopause.
Evaluate the etiology of heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) in order to initiate appropriate treatment or referral. Identify available therapies and treatment strategies for patients with HMB, considering etiology, risks/benefits, and individual patient needs and preferences. Identify strategies to enhance patient/clinician communication, including providing education materials, assessing patient expectations, and involving patient in treatment decisions.
